802.1AXbk - Link Aggregation Amendment: Protocol Addressing

The full title of this PAR is "Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Link Aggregation Amendment: Protocol Addressing".

This standard specifies changes to the addressing used by the link aggregation control and marker protocols.

The purpose of this amendment is to change the constraints on the addresses used by the protocols defined in the 802.1AX standard in order to allow an aggregated link to span Two-Port Media Access Control (MAC) Relays and to span Provider Bridged Networks.

IEEE Std 802.1aj defines a Two-Port MAC Relay (TPMR), which blocks the address currently used by the 802.1AX protocols. Similarly, Provider Bridged Networks defined in IEEE Std 802.1Q block the address currently used for the 802.1AX protocols. It is desirable to allow aggregated links to be selectively extended using TPMRs or Provider Bridged Networks. Changes to the protocol addressing are required to allow additional addresses to be used.
