Overview

The role of IEEE 802.15 Smart Utility Networks (SUN) Task Group 4g is to create a PHY amendment to 802.15.4 to provide a global standard that facilitates very large scale process control applications such as the utility smart-grid network capable of supporting large, geographically diverse networks with minimal infrastructure, with potentially millions of fixed endpoints.

Current Status

TG4g received NesCom approval December 9th 2008. The TG4g PAR can be viewed here. TG4g held its first meeting at the 802 Interim meeting in Los Angeles January 2009. During this meeting it agreed the Call for Applications and Call for Proposals.

A Call for Applications was issued on February 2nd 2009. Presentations were given at the March Plenary, held in Vancouver March 8th to 13th 2009.

A Call for Proposals was issued January 22nd 2009. Preliminary Proposals were presented at the March Plenary, held in Vancouver March 8th to 13th 2009.

24 Final Proposals were submitted by May 2nd 2009 of which 22 were presented to TG4g at the IEEE 802 Interim meeting in Montreal May 10th to 15th 2009. A summary of the proposals can be found here.

The next meeting will be held in San Francisco July 12th to 17th. Between now and the July meeting work will continue merging proposals in order to select a baseline from which to start drafting the amendment. This work will be done on the TG4g mailing list, the regular conference calls and other calls as required.
