RE: [802SEC] Get the note for dummies turned off.

Pat,

All the reflectors that I use work exactly the opposite of the 802
reflectors. Variety...didn't someone once call that "the spice of life"?

So, you and I have had different experiences with different reflectors.

Personally, I like the reminder at the top, since my rote reaction to an
email from a reflector is to hit the simple "reply" button, which has
exactly the opposite effect here than what I expect: I received an email
from a list, I want my reply to go back to the list. I also have a problem
with the extra copy of the same reply when needing to use the "reply all"
button to send back to the list. When it is my message to which someone
replies, I get that extra copy. It is entirely useless. My inbox gets
enough stuff already, without duplicates. When I am doing the replying, I
end up having to delete the originator's address from the email, to avoid
stuffing their inbox with a superfluous email.

Since the purpose of an email reflector is to support group discussion,
shouldn't the mechanics of the list be tailored to make that use the
simplest?

I have heard the arguments on the other side, including that the way this
list is set up helps to keep folks from embarrassing situations should they
zap off an ill-considered email in the heat of the moment. I just don't
agree with them.

Bob,

All the reflectors that I use work the same way as the 802 SEC reflector
(and I'm on a lot of reflectors run by a lot of different organizations such
as Infiniband, T1X1, 10 GEA and Agilent). The 802 reflectors operate in a
pretty normal way. All the 802 reflectors that I am on work that way
including the 10 Gig Ethernet reflector. The 10 Gig Ethernet reflector has a
continuous steam of newbies and they don't seem to need any note to figure
it out. We really don't need the note.

Regards,
Pat

Pat,

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful request. We have just added a few
new folks to the reflector and I turned this on to get them accustomed to
the peculiar way that 802 runs their reflectors. Since 802 is the only
reflector that does not automatically send replies to the entire list that I
have ever encountered, I wanted to be sure that everyone understood that
fact. I'll turn it off soon enough.

Can we please get whatever "feature" of the reflector has been activated to
put this inane note at the beginning of each message turned back off. Nobody
on this reflector should need this note and I'm getting tired of seeing it.
