IEEE 802:	Meeting Information Update Memo - 4th Announcement

DATE: Friday, June 29, 2001

SUBJ: Re: IEEE 802 LMSC Plenary Meeting - July 9-13, 2001, in Portland, Oregon

At 6pm PDT today the Registration Fee will increase to the normal $300 amount so this is your last chance to Pre-Register and save $50.

Due to the difficulties which some have experienced using the new Web Registration process, we extended the deadline for the Pre-Registration discount by 48 hours, to 6pm PDT, Friday, June 27. At that time the registration fee will be increased to the regular $300 amount. We believe we have now solved most of the problems that were occurring with Web Reg, but if you are still having difficulties we urge you to contact us for help in completing the process. (We do have an alternative method which you may use and still obtain the pre-registration discount, but you must do it before 6pm Friday).

Re: Web Registration Security: If you have concerns about Web Registration, we urge you to consider the following factoids:
*	In just the last 2 years over $436 Billion in credit card transactions have traversed the Internet in secure socket layer (SSL) connections.
*	There have been NO reported or documented cases of credit card info ever being retrieved from these highly encrypted packets.
*	By contrast, all of the frequently reported cases of network credit card info theft have been due to naïve vendors attempting to keep credit card data in files on their servers without adequate security and protective measures in place.
*	For security VeriSign never keeps full credit card info on file for any reason; once the transaction has been approved by the credit card processor (~2-4 seconds) only the first and last 4 digits are preserved (for tracking purposes).
*	VeriSign has a perfect track record; they have never been hacked, and have never lost any credit card info.
*	Even though the information is being passed across the Internet, SSL transactions have been shown to be at least 10E7 times more secure than a conventional transaction using a credit card machine with 800-dial-up service.

We look forward to seeing you in Portland.

Thank you, Dawn C. Slykhouse,
IEEE 802 Conference Organizer
