Re: [802SEC] +++EC Email Ballot+++ ENDS 11AUG +++ motion to approve forwarding of 802.11p PAR to NesCom

Title: Message
I was thinking along the same lines.

Not to throw a monkey wrench into the works, but I am curious ... if the 802.11p transport of data is relied on for safety things such as collision avoidance, etc., what happens if the link fails to operate for any of a number of reasons?  (And does this require some additional explanation in item 18?)

Again, I am not trying to obstruct progress, just not clear on how safety aspects/implications are isolated/divorced from network/data transmission reliability (or failure thereof).

Regards,
Carl

Comments:

1.  I congratulate the study group on producing thoughtful and detailed responses to the Five Criteria.

2.  PAR item 19 -- The additional information raises a concern as to why the provided text was not included in PAR item 18.  If I understand the nature of the project correctly, the 802.11 standard itself will not address the safety issues of the cited possible applications (e.g., collision avoidance), but will simply be providing connectivity and the safety issues will be addressed by other standards or specifications that use the provided vehicular wireless access.  If this is correct, I would recommend addition of a sentence to this effect to the note in 19.  If it is not correct, the paragraph in 19 should be moved to the explanation field of 18 as an appropriate red flag of the intended use of the standard.
