Status of Project IEEE 802.11 JTC1 Standing

Objective
Support the IEEE 802 and IEEE 802.11 liaisons with
JTC1/SC6
May 2008
The JTC1/SC6 Ad Hoc has come out of hibernation to deal with a request from China’s
delegation to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6/WG1 to try to find a way to have WAPI ratified
as an international standard.
Accomplishments:
- Drafted letter of invitation to
leaders of China’s
national body to participate in IEEE 802.11 to develop an amendment
incorporating the elements of WAPI technology within its scope into IEEE 802.11
- Planned for proposed meeting with China to
discuss development
Plans for July:
- If proposed meeting happens and
succeeds, create a Study Group to draft a PAR and 5 Criteria
- If
proposed meeting does not happen or does not reach a consensus, plan next steps
July 2006
802.11i has been ratified as an international standard in ISO. The JTC1/SC6
Ad Hoc group has completed its work and is no longer active.
The JTC1/SC6 Ad Hoc has been converted to a Standing Committee, which is
currently in hibernation.
November 2005
Achievements
The main achievements of this meeting were
- Created an ad hoc committee
to complete the review of ISO/IEC JTC1 document 1N7904. The part of review
already completed is found in 11-05-1205-00.
- Created an ad hoc committee
to prepare a rebuttal of SAC 2005-057, the "contradictions"
document China submitted against 802.11i (ISO/IEC JTC1 document 1N7903)
- Created an ad hoc committee
to complete the documentation required to become an ISO registration
authority
- Created an ad hoc committee
to write another outreach letter to China,
again requesting that China
work with IEEE 802 to harmonize WAPI and 802.11..
January 2006 Goals
- Accept documents created by
the ad hoc committees and consider further action items arising from the
802.11i and WAPI simultaneous fast track ballots
September 2005
Achievements
The main achievements of this meeting were
- Wrote liaison letter
11-05-953 to the JTC1 Secretariat, requesting formalization of the IEEE
802.11 Working Group providing the Registration Authority function for
ISO/IEC IS 8802-11 and forwarded it to the WG for approval
- Adopted a presentation
11-05-967 as the JTC1 Ad Hoc position on the 802.11i/WAPI fast track
ballots and forwarded it to the WG for approval

arising from the 802.11i and WAPI simultaneous fast track ballots
