IEEE P802.11ak - GENERAL LINK TASK GROUP - MEETING UPDATE

Status of IEEE 802.11ak Task Group

Enhancements For Transit Links Within Bridged Networks

Donald E. Eastlake 3rd, Chair and Editor
Mark Hamilton, Vice-Chair
Norman Finn, Vice-Editor
vacant, Secretary

Background

There are a large number of new products including home entertainment systems and industrial control equipment that have both an IEEE 802.11 wireless station capability and a wired IEEE 802.3 Ethernet capability. IEEE 802.11 has media operating in the gigabit per second range and has standardized security and quality of service improvements. These developments raise a demand for bridging of IEEE 802.11 media to the same level as other media can be bridged: as media internal to the network as well as media offering access to the network.

This effort is being coordinated with the parallel 802.1Qbz and 802.1AC-REV projects both of which have completed. IEEE Std 802.1Qbz-2016 and IEEE Std 802.1Qbz-2016 have been published.

Goals

To amend the 802.11 standard so as to provide protocols, procedures, and managed objects that enhance the ability of IEEE P802.11 media to provide internal connections as transit links within IEEE Std 802.1Q bridged networks.

Status

Draft P802.11ak_D6.0 has passed Sponsor Ballot with no unsatisfied comments. Transmission of Draft D6.0 to the IEEE Standards Revision Committee for final approval has been approved by 802.11 Task Group ak, the 802.11 Working Group, and the 802 Executive Committee.

Achievements

Between the November 2017 802.11 Working Group meeting and the Janary 2018 802.11 Working group meeting, two Sponsor Ballot recirculations were held on Drafts 5.0 and 6.0 respectively and all comments were resolved with no changes to Draft 6.0. At the January 802.11 meeting, Task Group ak passed a motion to send Draft 6.0 to IEEE Revcom. This motion was then passed by the IEEE 802.11 Working Group and, after the January meeting, the IEEE 802 Executive Committee voted to forward P802.11ak draft D6.0 to IEEE RevCom.
