IEEE P802.11 - TASK GROUP AQ - GROUP INFORMATION
Status of Project IEEE 802.11aq
Pre-Association Discovery (PAD) - Project completed in June 2018
Contents
Project Goals (derived from PAR)
Project Scope
TGaq developed an amendment which defines modifications to the IEEE 802.11 standard, above the physical layer (PHY), to enable delivery of pre-association Service Discovery information by IEEE 802.11 stations (STAs).
Project Information
The WLAN environment is evolving and is no longer one where stations are merely looking for access to internet service. This creates opportunities to deliver new services, as the IEEE 802.11 standard needs to be enhanced to better advertise and describe these new services.
This amendment provides mechanisms that assist in pre-association discovery of services by addressing the means to advertise their existence and enable delivery of information that describes them. This information about services is to be made available prior to association by stations operating on IEEE 802.11 wireless networks.
There are existing higher layer service discovery/description approaches (e.g. Universal Plug and Play - UPnP, Bonjour) as well as mechanisms to deliver information in pre-association states (e.g. just as Access Network Query Protocol - ANQP can be delivered over Generic Advertisment Service - GAS).
The group evaluated advertising protocols that permit information about these services to be delivered using an approach that may avoid developing yet another service description scheme while leveraging the existing evolving schemes.

IEEE P802.11 - Pre-Association Discovery (PAD) Study Group
Contents
Background
Pre-Association Discovery is a study group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that
will address the problem of how a Station - STA (e.g. a Mobile Device) discovers the availability of services
within the network to which another STA (e.g. an Access Point) is connected.
During the July 2012 meeting, the group decided to change its name from Infrastructure Service Discovery (ISD)
to Pre-Association Discovery (PAD).
Goals
The goal of this IEEE 802.11 study group is to produce an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard to allow
a common approach to allow IEEE 802.11 STAs to discover services within external networks in a generic
and standardized manner.
It is felt that this will not only help users within home, enterprise and public
access markets, but also assist manufacturers and operators to provide common
components and services for IEEE 802.11 customers.
