Adjourn ================ 802.11 & Research engagement: Some observations, input from
Jim Lansford, Stephen McCann, Dorothy Stanley, Lei Wang
Is there a problem that we are trying to solve? What is the problem that Paul is trying to solve?
·
802.11 has WNG as the venue for new work and topic discussions. Have had research related presentations in the past.
o
WLAN Sensing came in based on research work
o
Full Duplex came into WNG, TIG formed, no subsequent Study Group.
·
Had full duplex TIG in the past. Technology into product not quite ready.
o
Brings up a question – is it time to look at FD again?
·
802 goals: Market driven features in products
·
Researcher goals are publish papers, get grant money.
·
Interaction with researchers IS happening at a company level on an ongoing basis. Funding at the company level.
·
Company/research community concerns re: patents
·
Paul: 802 needs to be more proactive in engaging researchers. It will benefit the 802 community to being in new ideas, researchers to increase innovation. Can we improve our outreach/engagement with the research community?
·
Generally, always room for process improvement.
·
Publicity Standing Committee did perform some outreach and engagement.
·
New researchers become interested. New researchers ask for education about 802.11. Generally, not our job to provide detailed training/education on the standard.
·
Fora could include workshop, Invited topics.
·
Timing is a factor – towards later phases of a project (for example 11ax/11be), members start bringing in presentations of new mechanisms for standard consideration.
·
Sweet spot is technology that is productizable in 3-5 years. More than 5 years out is not relevant and not generally of interest for 802 standardization.
·
Discussion ongoing between Jon Rosdahl and Tuncer Baykas re: 802 Workshop co-sponsored with an IEEE society. Nov 2022 timeframe was mentioned
·
Use Coexistence Workshop as an example: 1 day of the meeting to overlap, possibly on the weekend. Discussion of topics that might be of interest to the 802.11 Working Group. Identify topics, potentially get member input on topics of interest. The brainstormed list is below:
o
Full Duplex Operation - Revisit
o
Terrahertz operation (currently in discussion in 802.15)
o
Machine Learning for Receiver operation
o
mmWave Beamforming technology (Francesco Restuccia (Northeastern University): DeepBeam: Deep Waveform Learning for Coordination-Free Beam Management in mmWave Networks)
o
802.11 Private, Dedicated spectrum networks
o
Coexistence techniques and coexistence evolution
o
Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve WLAN performance, management
o
Evolution and directions for WLANs – broader
o
Coherent Optical (802.3) Potential for September: Short WNG presentation re: summary of 802 efforts/discussion, 802.11 topics of interest.
