September 2024

Background

Automotive is a new Topic Interest Group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will address the problem of WLAN STAs can more effectively and seamlessly use external Access Points in high mobility environments, specifically when the STA is in a vehicle.

Relevant documents presented in WNG that led to the creation of the Auto TIG:

l  Discuss contributions in the areas of, but not limited to:

       Use cases and requirements

       Key performance indicators

Technical approaches and 802.11 standard gaps in the areas such as protocols in association & authentication, seamless AP handover, optimized roaming algorithm etc.

       Alternative solutions

l  Develop and approve a final report (est July 2025) that will summarize the contributions and recommendations

The final report could give details about proposed standards activities if needed, or it may serve as a recommended practice for the automotive ecosystem to improve WLAN connectivity in vehicles.
