We switched off analogue TV in our area a year ago. The government ran TV ads, and sent out free “digiboxes” to the folks (mainly elders) who had only analogue TVs. Then they sent people round to show them how to operate their new equipment. The UK proposal is a similar, but more fundamental transition. It is based on the assumption that everybody will be wired in some sense. I can imagine a similar transition in the past when gas lighting was replaced with electric. Who has gas lighting now (except camping)? Doubtless there was an army of eager young things to explain to the old fuddy-duddies how to switch their lights on and off. I suspect that the UK governments thinking is that internet connectivity will be essential and (therefore) ubiquitous. Therefore it can be relied on. Two observations: 1.
Although I have a 20Mb down (2Mb up) cable connection, its service level is variable.
It is frequently not good enough to watch a 2Mbps streaming video download. 2.
My personal observation is that some folks can’t cope with the degree of complexity
we have in operating things connected to the internet. Until it’s as simple as switching on a light bulb, there will be some who are unable to cope. We have some way to go. Maintaining my internet connection sometimes has me sitting at the end of 30-minute
calls to the service department and crawling under the desk to reboot my cable modem etc… Undoubtedly it will happen, but it won’t happen real soon now. Best Regards, Adrian P STEPHENS Tel: +44 1954 204 609 (office) ---------------------------------------------- From:
