[STDS-802-11-TGBE] 11-21/0410 | Group addressed data frames with MLO

Hi Qi, thank you for your contribution and I generally support the direction in the document.

One of MLO benefits is redundancy – in both data plane (e.g., redundant transmissions) and management plane (managing a link through other links, without getting disconnected). Regardless of whether someone wants to use redundancy with MLO, it is something that the architecture should not prevent.

In case of group addressed frames, it seems up to this point we’ve been taking extra effort – with partial success – to prevent a duplicate from getting to the receiver, where in fact, receiving a duplicate is at minimum a welcome incidence, and at maximum a necessary feature, improving reception of data frames, which out of all data frames, are the ones that are not acknowledged.

Extra logic to prevent these duplicates may be comparable, if not more, than a simple duplicate detection with added benefits.

As far as the suggested text,

  • Table 10-5: Agree with a dedicated SN space (SNS) for group addressed data frames alone (not mixed with management frames); this is clean slate (new problem/opportunity) and copying a legacy behavior is unnecessary.

  • Table 10-6: Suggest to also include Address 1/RA in the receive cache multiplicity, which allows the transmitter to have a dedicated SN space per target group address, if it wants to:

Indexed by <Address 1, MLD MAC Address of the MLD with which the STA identified by Address 2 is affiliated, sequence number>.

It’s worth noting that duplicate reception of group addressed frames also happens in DMG (11ad/ay), where because of directional PHY (narrow antenna beams) group addressed frames are duplicated and sent in many/all physical directions, which means a receiver can see multiple copies when beams overlap. DMG added a receive cache to Table 10-6 too (below), where index also includes Address 1 as I suggested above.

Regards,
Payam

Hi Alfred,

Would you please add the following two CR docs to the submission queue?

— 11-21-0410, proposed resolution to 11be cc34 CIDs on group addressed data frames duplicate detection (4 CIDs)

— 11-21-0411, propose resolution to 11be cc34 CIDs on GTK for MLO (9 CIDs)

Thanks,

Qi

Notice: Please note that by now all authors of the submissions for PDTs and CRs (especially MAC) should have sent requests for feedback to the IEEE TGbe reflector. Members are invited to provide feedback for these contributions prior to the conference call via e-mail so that the time in the conf calls is used efficiently.

Best Regards,

Alfred
