Prima facie, I see no reason why beamforming needs to be restricted to

infrastructure BSSen.  A beam can in principle be formed between any two

stations irrespective of their roles and of the BSS type.

Dear TGm and TGax participants,

(Including TGax because many of those involved in TGac are participating there).

TGmc is considering a comment on mechanism introduced in 802.11ac thus:

It says "If the VHT NDP Announcement frame contains only one STA Info field, then the RA field is set to the address of the STA identified by the AID in the STA Info field.", but the AID in the STA Info field cannot identify a STA, if that STA is in fact an AP or a mesh STA or an IBSS STA. Also, there's no AID in the STA Info field

Change to "If the VHT NDP Announcement frame contains only one STA Info field and the frame is directed to a non-AP STA in an infrastructure BSS, then the RA field is set to the address of the STA identified by the AID12 subfield in the STA Info field."

MAC

The issue is that the VHT NDP Announcement frame uses AID to identify STAs,  but AIDs exist only

in infrastructure networks.   So what to do in a non-infrastructure network?

Before TGmc go ahead and indicate that VHT Beamforming (or at least,  the VHT NDP Announcement frame) works only in an infrastructure network,

I’d like to solicit input from the participants of the original work as to whether it was intended for VHT beamforming to work in IBSS, mesh and outside BSS contexts.

Comments welcome.
