Steven, Mark –
Since PAME-BI is used in the spec as a field (actually one bit), it was deemed undesirable to change the field name. Hence, expanding it to
Preassociation Message Exchange BSSID Independent does not seem to be a practical solution (especially in Figure 9-473 (Draft P802.11REVmd D1.0).
Regarding the use of BI for beacon interval, there are 466 instances of “beacon interval” in the specification and 103 instances of “beacon intervals”. While shortening these
to BI or BIs would compress the specification some, I don’t think it is significant compression. When we discussed these changes on the TGmd call it was decided to simply expand the few uses of “BI” to be “beacon interval” and to rename the awake BI and doze
BI to be A-BI and D-BI. This approach removes the use of BI as a standalone abbreviation and provides specification consistency with minimal changes.
This said if you feel strongly that we should introduce BI as an abbreviation for beacon interval, I guess we could make the change – though it would require significantly more
changes to the specification.

Joseph

since "PAME-BI" was introduced by the IEEE 802.11u work, I'm certainly content to remove the acronym
and expand it in all cases, per your 2nd suggestion.

comments on the proposed changes
I do appreciate the effort, but I think that since "PAME-BI" is an
obscure part of the spec, while "BI"s are a fundamental part of the
spec, we should not be messing with the latter for the sake of the
former. Hence I would not do all the "BI" -> "beacon interval"
expansion, or the "awake BI" -> "A-BI" stuff, or the "BI" -> "bi"
stuff. Rather, I would add "BI" as an abbreviation and:
- Either change "PAME-BI" to "PAMEBI" (3x)
- Or don't abbreviate at all. In F9-472 call the field
"Preassociation Message Exchange BSSID Independent". In 9.4.2.92
delete the " (PAME-BI)". In 11.23.3.2.5 change "PAME-BI"
to "Preassociation Message Exchange BSSID Independent"
Also:
- "the time duration of the beacon interval" seems more than a little
verbose. I think "the beacon interval" is sufficient, since the
term is defined as a time interval
- I find "beacon interval units" confusing, because it might
be understood as the units for BIs, namely TUs. It might be better
to word as "units of a beacon interval"
Thanks,
Mark

I have uploaded a document to address CID 1268:
https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/18/11-18-1081-00-000m-proposed-resolution-for-cid-1268.docx
It is a long document, but since there have been offline discussions on it and it is basically editorial, I should
be able to get through it in the 5 min. allocated, unless there are questions or comments on the proposed changes.

Joseph
