Re: [STDS-802-11-TGM] Remove channel 14

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Task Group M Technical Reflector ---

Hi all,

I was in charge of the regulatory changes in Japan made last year.

The modification to 2.4 GHz is to enable the 11ax devices to use channels 1 to 13.

Channel 14 is not mentioned as it is limited to DSSS and not applicable to 11ax.

Adding a note may help to avoid misunderstanding like this, but the regulatory rules are not fully described in Annex E anyway. Implementers should check the rules and should have their products compliant with those in each country/region by themselves.

On the other hand, channel 144 in 5.6 GHz is now allowed in Japan but it’s not included in Table E-3, yet.

I would suggest to add channel 144 in operating classes 34, 44, and 58, channel 140 in operating class 39, and channel 138 in operating classes 128 and 130.

Best regards,

tomo

Thanks Edward,

If that approach is acceptable to people, I could modify the contribution to do that.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for this!

This document is the notification sent by Japan MIC to WTO to announce that the regulations in Japan are updated to allow the WLAN system with IEEE 802.11ax support.   It does not affect the use of the CH14 for 802.11b as Tomo replied.  I would favor your alternative option to  add a note in the table to clearly indicate that these operating classes the behavior is restricted to 11b only.

Take care,

Ed

Mark and all,

Thanks for your feedback.

Attached (because I don't have a better way to show it) is the reference that Peter sent me that prompted me to propose this change.

Another option is to add a note in the table to clearly indicate that these operating classes the behavior is restricted to 11b only. (perhaps in the Behavior Limits set column).

I guess one other question I have (that always comes up in the discussion about channel 14) is are there any recent devices that actually support operation on channel 14?

Cheers,

Mike
