I'd certainly support seeing if we can tidy things up a bit in the 802.11 spec. As for hex numbers, note also the rather wacky '010FAC474352'H notation in the MIB (which corner-cases to ''H !).
I assume we have no choice here.
There are also some hex numbers that aren't directly marked as such, e.g. in Country element examples, though at least I think I got that "(in hexadecimal)" added in a previous
TGm: NOTE 1—The following example Country element (see Figure 9-162 (Country element format)) describes U.S. operation (55, 53) using both Table E-1 (Operating classes in the United States) class 12 (nonglobal) and Table E-4 (Global operating classes) class 81 (global) for the 2.4 GHz band, 11 channels at 20
dBm limit (in hexadecimal): 07, 0F, 55, 53, 04, C9, 0C, 00, 01, 0B, 14, C9, 51, 0, 01, 0B, 14. As for binary numbers, it's fairly chaotic.
See CIDs 457, 499. As for MAC addresses and OUIs, I think I got those fixed in a previous TGm.
I think the only one I couldn't was the WNM log: The WNM Log Msg field contains the entire syslog message, consisting of the PRI, HEADER, and MSG portion of a WNM log message as described in IETF RFC 5424. The TAG field of the MSG portion of the message is a 17-octet string containing the ASCII representation of the STA MAC address using hexadecimal notation with colons between octets. The octet containing the Individual/Group bit occurs last, and that bit is in the least significant position within that octet. See 11.21.2.5 (WNM log event request and report). NOTE—For example, the TAG field for a STA with MAC address AC-DE-48-12-7B-80 is “80:7B:12:48:DE:AC” or “80:7b:12:48:de:ac”. However, I think I see some colonic addresses in J.6.4 CCMP test vectors and J.10 SAE test vector. Thanks, Mark --

Hello everyone, Bob Grow suggested that I bring this up to REVme for consideration. In a couple of issues recently addressed by the RAC, there were cases where there is no consistency in the respresentation of hex and binary numbers as well as hex identifiers.
Bob created the two documents I have attached. You will notice that 802.11 is called out in the PPT. Bob has also met with IEEE editorial staff and is suggesting some updates to the IEEE style guide. If there is interest, we could schedule some time to discuss this in context of REVme. Cheers, Mike To unsubscribe from the STDS-802-11-TGM list, click the following link:
