Re: [STDS-802-11-TGM] Generation elements

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Task Group M Technical Reflector ---

HI, Mark,

I have two “high level” thoughts, which (depending on where the group goes with these) might lead to some details in the protocol:

  • First, I note that this problem of an IE being modified/extended really has nothing to do with “Generation” of Wi-Fi, other than that this problem does seem to frequently (but far from always) occur with such IE modifications that come in a “major PHY/MAC amendment”.  I would move away from calling this – or relating it to – a “generation” concept.  Really, it is just a “version” (for lack of a better word) of a given IE, which has been extended over time/over amendments.  Further, since WFA is currently in the middle of considering a feature with a very similar name (but with a completely different purpose), I think the name “Generation element” is going to cause confusion.
  • The above is half just editorial (just please pick a different name), but the other half goes to the heart of how/when the feature will be used.  If we move away from an assumption that there is a “generation” of 802.11, and that the generation would/might include multiple element updates, but rather think of this as each IE having “versions”, and there might be multiple versions over time, that would result in a different view of how we want to encode this in protocol.  However, I think this is a much more natural and robust way of grouping multiple of these together, that we gather up all the updates that apply to a given IE into one “Revision IE” (or whatever we call it), and do not try to relate the changes across IEs (and across different timeframes) to each other.

Thoughts?

Mark

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/23/11-23-2192-02-000m-generation-elements.pptx

has been uploaded, with an update to the slides on Generation elements.

Alex and I have attempted to address the comments made during the

presentation at the last teleconf.

We would welcome feedback on these updated slides, especially if you

abstained or voted no in the straw poll, to find out (a) whether you're

now persuaded and (b) if not, what you still find unpersuasive.

Thanks,

Mark
