--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Task Group M Technical Reflector ---
Hi Robert, Mark, and all, I was the one to add that HCCA is not used by HE STAs in the spec and I recall there were some cautious opinions such as TSPEC should be decoupled and be used.
But reading the proposed change which says to add that it’s deprecated at the start of 10.2.3.3 HCF controlled channel access (HCCA), I don’t see any side effect. (In the future, we indeed need
to be careful deleting the related parts.) That being said, 802.11e is not just about HCCA. We have EDCA, BlockAck, etc.
So, I think it is better to correct that in the resolution while accepting the given proposed change.
Best regards, tomo From: Stacey, Robert <robert.stacey@xxxxxxxxx>

Hi Mark, All, I think HCCA is effectively already deprecated. In 10.23.1 it says: "HCCA is not used by DMG, S1G, and HE STAs." Not having been a part of the discussion it sounds like we are moving to formalize the above statement and preparing for eventual removal. I support this direction. I recall that at the time this statement was added in 11ax, the overriding objective was to not have to consider HCCA support for the various new features been added;
the HCCA framework didn't work well with the emerging multi-user framework. I'm not sure why it wasn't deprecated at that point. -Robert From: Mark Hamilton <mark.hamilton2152@xxxxxxxxx> --- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Task Group M Technical Reflector --- Hi, Jon, I’ll weigh in on at least one aspect: I note that the Comment says “802.11e should be deprecated.” Perhaps the question here is the old “Do you implement 802.11e (EDCA), or do you implement WFA’s WMM?” dichotomy… But, I’d rather not turn over that rock. We seem to reached
a stability around this confusion, and should let it lie, IMHO. That said, I see that the Proposed Change is actually, in effect, “HCCA should be deprecated.” That is a very different question. While I think HCCA had a lot of promise, the reality is that 802.11 has gone in other directions with various
triggered access methods, and as far as I know there is zero implementation of HCCA in the real-world. (Someone will correct me if I’m wrong about that, I’m sure.) So, I would say, “Sure, we should probably deprecate HCCA.” Note that this is doing a bit of surgery, however, as it implies also deprecating HCCA coordination between APs with overlapping BSSs (OBSS). But, we do _not_ want to deprecate or otherwise accidentally break BSS color, for example,
or some other features for OBSS management/control. Does that in turn mean that QLoad goes away? I’m not sure. What about AP PeerKey? Again, I’m not sure. Well need to do some careful pulling on this thread, to keep the edges of the surgery clean. During the Discussion a straw poll was held: Straw Poll: Do you agree HCCA should be deprecated? Y: 4, N: 0, Abs: 3. ACTION ITEM: To be posted to the reflector, along with the poll results, that we plan to deprecate. Marked the CID More work is required. Assign to Jon ROSDAHL. Bring back on May 6 teleconference. If you have an opinion, please let me know, This will be on the May 6th Telecon Agenda for preparation of a disposition.
