[STDS-802-11] FW: [802SEC] Proposed PAR: P802c - Overview and Architecture - Amendment: Local Media Access Control (MAC) Address Usage

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---

Dear 802.11 members,

At the November 802 Plenary session there was significant discussion on a proposed PAR related to P802c,  as it was seen as interacting with probable solutions to improved

privacy.

At the time the sentiment in 802.11 was to oppose this PAR.

At the closing EC,  the PAR in its original form was not brought to motion;  instead

an 802.1 study group was formed to allow stakeholders to provide their input on a modified

PAR,  and I know that a number of 802.11 members participated.

802.1 is now bringing a new PAR on this topic for approval in March.

I would like to determine from those in 802.11 who have an opinion on this matter

whether they support it or not.

There are a number of possible ways to do this:

1.       A discussion topic in the 802.11 opening plenary

2.       Attend the PAR SC meetings to contribute to the feedback provided from 802.11

3.       Attend the 802.11 SG to contribute to its response to the feedback received

4.       Discuss the nature of any comments and response received during the closing 802.11 plenary meeting.

Please reply to me privately or on the reflector with any comments on this topic.

An agenda item can be requested at any time from now to the Monday morning when

we review the 802.11 Monday plenary meeting agenda.

Best Regards,

Adrian P STEPHENS

Subject: [802SEC] Proposed PAR: P802c - Overview and Architecture - Amendment: Local Media Access Control (MAC) Address Usage

Folks,

The November 802.1 plenary authorized the Local Address Study Group at the 802.1 interim to potentially draft PAR & CSD for the local address space.  The Study Group had a productive meeting per the minutes (http://www.ieee802.org/1/files/public/docs2015/admin-minutes-lasg-0115-v01.docx) with the following conclusion:

The 802.1 Local Address Study Group (LASG) met for five hours over the course of three days during the January 2015 IEEE 802 Interim session in Atlanta.  During these meetings the LASG developed a PAR and CSG for recommendations on local address usage.  While this PAR is similar to that circulated to Working Group chairs during the November 2014 Plenary, it represents a considerable reworking of the text of the PAR and CSD with wider participation from members of other 802 Working Groups.  The comments received on the previous PAR were considered during the development of this PAR, however the LASG did not generate comment-by-comment responses.  The LASG requests that the Working Groups consider this as a new PAR and CSD.

As a result, I am pre-circulating the new proposed PAR for P802c as posted here:

http://www.ieee802.org/1/files/public/docs2015/new-addresses-thaler-local-address-usage-par-0115-v1.pdf

The  new 'CSD' is here:

http://ieee802.org/1/files/public/docs2015/lasg-mjt-802c-CSD-0115-v02.pdf

These are for pre-circulation to meet the 30-day requirement for March plenary EC approval to forward to NesCom.

Cheers,
Glenn.
