Hello Mark, Some embedded comments -Robert From: Mark Rison [mailto:m.rison@xxxxxxxxxxx] I am not in Atlanta, so cannot air my concerns in person, but I am not a fan of the proposed style, because it requires me to look (or at least check) in multiple places to find how a particular thing (frame, protocol, feature) operates. [RS] I added a slide on the “need to look in multiple places” comment, which is the main objection I hear about this new style. I think we necessarily have to choose here: do we group by features by the generation
in which they are introduced or do we keep all the variants of a feature in one subclause? I personally think that grouping by generation is better. Quite a few of us keep the published amendments around after they have been rolled into an 802.11 revision
just so we can figure out when something was added. In addition, the proposed style does not prevent the need to update Clauses 4-11 with new text to cover some of the changes introduced by 11ax. [RS] It does not prevent changes to clause 10 and 11, but it does minimize them. I note in 17/0164r1 a suggestion that there be wording of the form
•
An HE STA does not conform to the requirements of clause 4-11, except where specifically referenced from this Clause. [RS] This is from the 16/0035r0, the document for the initial discussion around changing the style. We (TGax) decided that such a statement was not needed. Clauses 4-11 apply to a HE STA in the sense
that an HE STA is a VHT STA (is a HT STA is a QoS STA is a STA; may be a FILS STA; may be a GLK STA; may be a mesh STA; is not a DMG STA; etc.). Additional HE operation is defined in Clause 27 and where that new functionality reuses and/or changes existing
features, this is called out. No such wording appears in 11ax/D1.0. The contradictions between Clause 27 and earlier clauses do need to be resolved in some way, but I think the correct way – if this new style is adopted, which as I said I think is problematic – then I think the polarity should be:
•
An HE STA conforms to Clauses 4-11, except where specifically referenced from this clause. lest some feature be forgotten and hence not be part of what an HE STA conforms to. Mark --

Hello All, Just a reminder that I will be discussing the new amendment style during the AM1 slot Thursday morning. I will provide an overview of the problems we are trying to solve with this new style. I will review in detail how we are using the new style in 11ax. If you have any reservations about the new style, please air them tomorrow morning. Presentation material in 17/0164. -Robert _______________________________________________________________________________
