Re: [STDS-802-11] Proposed LS to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6/WG1 in relation to a Preliminary Work Item (PWI) proposal in SC6/WG1 for a new Deterministic Wireless Industrial Network

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---

G’day all

There has been significant progress in developing a LS from IEEE 802 for SC6/WG1 in relation to the Preliminary Work Item (PWI) proposal in SC6/WG1 for a new Deterministic Wireless Industrial Network.

The current status is that, after various discussions, including with IEEE 802.1 TSN, it has been agreed:

  • Only 11-22-0081-03 will be liaised to SC6/WG1
    • ie not the previously associated ppt deck (11-22-0080)
  • No further review of 11-22-0081-03 is required by IEEE 802.1 WG, and they will not object to it being liaised as long as IEEE 802.11 WG approves it
  • 11-22-0081-03 will be considered by IEEE 802.11 WG next Tuesday
    • I will make a personal motion, and require a second
  • Assuming it is approved by IEEE 802.11 WG, 11-22-0081-03 will be edited into a final form appropriate for liaising to SC6/WG1 for consideration by IEEE 802 EC

Subject: Proposed LS to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6/WG1 in relation to a Preliminary Work Item (PWI) proposal in SC6/WG1 for a new Deterministic Wireless Industrial Network

G’day all

The IEEE 802 JTC1 SC spent some time today discussing a potential Liaison Statement (LS)  to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6/WG1 in relation to a Preliminary Work Item (PWI) proposal in SC6/WG1 for a new Deterministic Wireless Industrial Network.  The general gist of the LS is to note that Wi-Fi (defined by IEEE 802.11 WG) and Ethernet (defined by IEEE 802.3 WG) can be used with TSN (defined by IEEE 802.1 WG) for these purposes already and their capabilities will be refined further so they can meet even more Deterministic Wireless Industrial Networking requirements in the future. The LS requests WG1’s assistance in refining IEEE 802.1/3/11, rather than WG1 specifying yet another Deterministic Wireless Industrial Network solution.

Some edits were suggested today, particularly related to potential confusion between Wi-Fi 6/802.11ax and Wi-Fi 7/802.11be. Editing is underway to remedy any confusion in both the LS (11-22-0081) and the associated ppt deck (11-22-0080). In the meantime, if anyone has any additional comments or refinements, could you please send them to the lead author (Dave Cavalcanti (Intel) - dave.cavalcanti@xxxxxxxxx). The plan is to make any necessary edits to the two documents in the next day or so and then bring the LS for approval (as a personal motion) by the IEEE 802.11 WG at its plenary session next Tuesday. The LS will then need to be approved by the IEEE 802 EC in time to be submitted to the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6/WG1 interim meeting on 15-18 February 2022. At least one IEEE 802 expert will participate in the meeting when it is discussed.

Glenn Parsons (IEEE 802.1 WG Chair) and David Law (IEEE 802.3 WG Chair), could you please bring this e-mail to the attention of your respective WGs?
