[STDS-802-11] Liaison from ETSI TC BRAN on TR 104 893

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---
Dear Members,

I received a liaison in April from ETSI TC BRAN on TR 104 893. The LS addresses TC BRAN's work on Technical Report (TR) 104 893. TR 104 893 addresses Wireless Access System including Radio Local Area Network (WAS/RLAN) coexistence challenges with emerging solid-state weather radars.

You can find the full liaison here:

I have quoted it below so for easy reference:

Dear Robert, Dear Gaurav, Dear Kevin,

ETSI TC BRAN would like to inform you and your members that TC BRAN’s technical report TR 104 893 is nearing its completion. TR 104 893 addresses Wireless Access System including Radio Local Area Network (WAS/RLAN) Coexistence Challenges with Emerging Solid-State Weather Radars. You may find the latest version of the draft report at [1].
The TR “[…] investigate[s] coexistence between Wireless Access Systems including Radio Local Area Network (WAS/RLAN) systems and the next generation of weather radar systems operating in particular in the frequency band 5600 MHz to 5650 MHz using solid-state power amplifiers (SSPAs) in their transmitters” [2].
“The transition from traditional high-power tube-based radar systems to SSPA-based systems introduces significant changes in emission characteristics, which may impact the effectiveness of [Dynamic Frequency Selection] as currently defined in [Harmonised Standard] EN 301 893” [1]. For example, emerging radars using SSPA achieve higher efficiency but transmit with lower peak power when compared to previous generation radars using klystrons or magnetrons. To emit the same amount of energy, these emerging radars transmit pulse sequences longer than previous generation radars emit.
TC BRAN will conduct its next plenary meeting BRAN #135 [3] in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 2026-06-08 until 2026-06-12.
TC BRAN would like to kindly thank you for your consideration of this liaison statement and welcomes your organisation’s feedback. Also, we encourage your organisations and your members to contribute to and to participate in TC BRAN’s next meeting, in accordance with the ETSI Directives and the applicable partnership agreements.
 Best regards,
 On behalf of TC BRAN
Guido R. Hiertz (Chairman of ETSI TC BRAN)
