The following will provide a brief overview and a list of next steps for the Wireless Personal Area Networking (WPAN) Study Group (SG). Please review and contact Dick Braley, Bob Heile or myself for further information. I. III. THE MOTION "Move to form a Wireless PAN Study Group under 802.11 with the charter of drafting a PAN PAR for presentation at the next Plenary of 802." Chair: Dick Braley, Vice Chair: Bob Heile, Secretary/Tech Editor: Ian Gifford Passed on March 11, 1998: Approve __35__ Do Not Approve__0__ Abstain __10__ This study will examine the requirements for Wireless Personal Area Networking (WPAN) of PCs, peripherals, and consumer electronic devices to communicate and interoperate with one another. With the development of the 2.4GHz 1-2Mbit/s WLAN standard as well as the new projects considering higher data rates at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, IEEE 802.11 is now investigating a lower rate and range for Wearable Computers. Our desire was to present to the IEEE 802 Standards Executive Board and the 802.11 Working Group to gain sponsorship for a Study Group for the wireless PAN (WPAN). That, in fact, did occur and my purpose here is to alert you to a forthcoming summary of the meeting activities that will be sent out by Ian Gifford within the next few days. We have begun planning for the next meeting, and the details will be covered in Ian's review of the 802 Plenary Proceedings as they relate to our activities. I look forward to seeing you soon.
