[STDS-802-16] Fwd: [STDS-802-22] Proposed IEEE 802.11y

802.16 People,

Thought you'd be interested in this note on the 802.22 reflector from Paul Thompson, a former 802.16 member.

Roger

>Folks:
>	Carl has sent to you for comment the Draft PAR for IEEE 802.11y: the extension of IEEE 802.11 to include operation at 3650-3700 MHz in the USA plus the inclusion of a Contention-based Protocol (CBP) to promote "fairness" among the multiple users sharing the band. I wanted to let you know that I participated in the Study Group which prepared the Draft PAR and voted to approve it. While I don't plan to participate in preparing the Standard for IEEE 802.11y, I was interested in getting the Draft PAR "on the table" as soon as possible for two reasons:
>	a) Whatever work is done within the IEEE to validate a "fairness" protocol for band sharing would seem to help accelerate the possible inclusion of one in the IEEE 802.22 Standard, and
>	b) I wanted to "call the question" on the conflict between the existing IEEE 802.16h Coexistence Task Group and the proposed IEEE 802.11y Task Group because the Draft PAR does not propose to create a CBP which is compatible with any other air interface, not even IEEE 802.16. I want to see the IEEE Exec Committee wrestle with this problem sooner rather than later. If they resolve it in favor of creating a "Exec-level" Task Group chartered to invent a CBP which is compatible with both the time-driven air interface of IEEE 802.16 and the event-driven air interface of IEEE 802.11, then that CBP could also be designed to be compatible with whatever air interface we evolve for IEEE 802.22.
>	I'm interested in any comments anyone in the IEEE 802.22 Working Group may have on the above topic...I'm new to the politics of IEEE 802.11 and may have misread some things.
