Dear 802.16 Participants, I want to call your attention to a liaison statement that was approved today by ITU-R Working Party 5D at the closing plenary of its meeting in Chongqing, China. Though it has been not been put into final format for delivery to IEEE and other organizations, and though the attachments are not yet incorporated, I do want to make sure you are aware of it because it has near-term implications for the 802.16 Working Group. This "Liaison Statement on IMT-Advanced Development": reports that "the final outcome of Steps 4-7 of the IMT-Advanced process" included the "approval" of WirelessMAN-Advanced as an IMT-Advanced technology. It notes that this technology was "developed by IEEE as the WirelessMAN-Advanced specification incorporated in IEEE Std 802.16 beginning with approval of IEEE Std 802.16m." WirelessMAN-Advanced was also "accepted for inclusion in the standardization phase of the IMT-Advanced process." The 802.16 WG needs to rapidly move forward with the development of its final submission, due in late March, toward the IMT-Advanced Recommendation. The WG's ITU-R Liaison Group will take the lead on developing the draft. However, it will work closely with TGm as the 802.16m draft is concluded in timely fashion. Thanks to the 802.16 participants (as well as those of WP 5D and the external evaluation groups) who put many hours of diligent effort into reaching this happy conclusion. Congratulations on this milestone! Regards, Roger Dr. Roger B.
