Tourist information
Málaga has been enriched by various different civilizations that passed by and left their traces in our unique lands.
Málaga, with the name 'Malaka' (fish salting place), was founded by the Phoenicians about 800 BC and was used as a commercial enclave, following the colonization that had been initiated 1100 BC by the foundation of Gadir (Cádiz).
70 years of after the Greek domain, Malaga was dominated by the Carthaginians. After the Punic Wars that finished in 202 B.C. with the Roman victory, Málaga fell under Roman domain and was named Flavia Malacita.
Converted into an important point of passage, Málaga was connected with other Roman centers on the Peninsula and harbors of the Mediterranean Sea.
Major sights in the center include the cathedral and several churches, each with its own distinctive style. With over twenty museums, fifteen of them grouped together in the same area, Málaga has become a true City of Museums. With the incorporation of new projects (Wine Museum, Heritage Museum, Fine Arts Museum and the Holy Week Museum), its Historical Quarter alone will have as many as twenty-three museum facilities, making Málaga one of the cities with the highest density of museums in its Historical Quarter.
Your itinerary can be theme-based or simply focussed on the most important. We can guarantee that there are options to suit everyone's tastes, from religious art to the most contemporary artistic expressions, like the Contemporary Art Centre , as well as popular art and interactive museums.
Spain's celebrated painter, Pablo Picasso, was born in 1881 in the corner house of an elegant yellow-toned block on Plaza de la Merced. His birthplace was declared an historic-artistic monument in 1983 and in 1991 it became the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. The centerhas been created to foster cultural activities, including the promotion of contemporary art with a special emphasis on Picasso himself. You can visit also the Picasso Museum in the City Center.
