IEEE 802.16's Session #55 was held on 12-15 May 2008 at the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel in Macao, P.R. China. This was an Interim Session of the Working Group. The Member Host was Jianmin Lu of Huawei, with China Mobile, Huawei, ZTE, and CATR as Corporate Hosts.

Attendance
The attendance list includes 402 individuals, smashing the 802.16 interim session record of 303 at Session #53.

Task Group m (TGm): Advanced Air Interface
Task Group m (TGm) continued with its advance work in the development of the P802.16m project to amend the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN-OFDMA specification so that, while offering continuing support for legacy WirelessMAN-OFDMA equipment, it can meet the emerging cellular layer requirements of IMT-Advanced next generation mobile networks. Following comment resolution, a new version IEEE 802.16m-08/003r3 of the System Description Document (SDD) was issued, and a new version IEEE 802.16m-08/004r2 of the Evaluation Methodology Document (EMD) will follow. Five new Rapporteur Groups (on HARQ, Preamble, Downlink MIMO, Uplink Control, and Uplink PHY) were chartered until Session #56, along with a Relay Ad Hoc group. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.

Update: A Call for Comments and Contributions on Project 802.16m System Description Document (SDD) opened, through 7 July.

Relay Task Group
The Relay Task Group completed the resolution of comments received in WG Letter Ballot Recirculation #28c. The Working Group agreed to issue a new draft, P802.16j/D5, and initiate Recirc #28d through 21 June. A closing report and minutes were issued.

Maintenance Task Group
The Working Group's Maintenance Task Group is developing the 802.16Rev2 project to revise IEEE Std 802.16. It resolved comments received in WG Letter Ballot Recirculation #26c. The Working Group agreed to initiate Recirc #26d, though 21 June, on the new draft, P802.16Rev2/D5. Rapporteur Groups were initiated to harmonize on four key topics. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.

License-Exempt Task Group
The License-Exempt Task Group completed the resolution of comments received in WG Letter Ballot Recirc #29b. The Working Group agreed to issue a new draft, P802.16h/D6, and initiate Recirc #29c through 7 June. Afterwards, the TG planned to address comments, update the draft, and conduct an additional recirc prior to Session #56, if appropriate. The TG issued a closing report and minutes.

Liaison Activities
The WG's ITU-R Liaison Group met actively throughout the session, issuing a meeting report (L802.16-08/035). As the result of this activity, the following WG actions arose:

Following the session, the WG received a statement from the 802.11 and 802.15 WGs on Co-located Coexistence (L802.16-08/036), as a response to an inquiry raised by the 802.16 WG in March (L802.16-08/019). As a result, the 802.19 Coexistence TAG has instituted an email reflector on the topic. Discussion has begun <http://ieee802.org/19/arc/stds-802-19colocate> and a meeting is planned for the July 802 Plenary.

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards has developed and is enhancing the WirelessMAN® Standard for wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE 802.16 is a unit of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization. A list of IEEE 802.16 standards and drafts is available on-line, as is an archive of previous Session Reports. The IEEE 802.16 Interactive Calendar includes sessions and deadlines.

"802.16 News" Mailing List
The "802.16 News" mailing list ("stds-802-16-news") has the sole purpose of distributing major announcements related to the Working Group. Those interested in following the progress of the group but not in the day-to-day details may wish to subscribe. Only the Working Group Chair is eligible to post to the list, and mailings will be rare: once after each bimonthly session and additionally for major news, such as the approval of a new standard. Those subscribing to the stds-802-16 mailing list, for active Working Group participants, need not subscribe to stds-802-16-news since the postings will be redundant.

With the approval of the IEEE 802.16 Working Group, this report (20 June 2008 release) was drafted and edited by:

Roger Marks (r.b.marks@ieee.org)
Chair, IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards
