Click here Sharing 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi and mobileMore capacity for Wi-Fi and mobile internet users could be made available in the upper 6 GHz spectrum band, under a new approach being explored by Ofcom. Demand for data has grown significantly in recent years – from people using both Wi-Fi and mobile networks – and we expect this to continue. This will put pressure on radio spectrum, the valuable and finite resource on which all radiocommunications depend. The upper 6 GHz spectrum band is currently a focus for industry interest to support this ongoing traffic growth. This interest is split between using the band for the exclusive introduction of either licensed mobile use or low power licence exempt use such as Wi-Fi. However, rather than choosing between the two, we believe an alternative approach is possible. We are exploring options that would enable the use of both Wi-Fi and mobile in the band. We are calling this ‘hybrid sharing’. Two examples for how this might be achieved are:
We are looking to identify appropriate hybrid sharing mechanisms to facilitate coexistence between licenced mobile and Wi-Fi in this band. We are also pressing for international harmonisation of hybrid sharing in this band, to enable economies of scale for equipment. We are inviting comments on this approach by 15 September 2023. Rhannu sbectrwm 6 GHz ar gyfer Wi-Fi a symudolGallai mwy o gapasiti i ddefnyddwyr rhyngrwyd Wi-Fi a symudol gael ei ddarparu yn y band sbectrwm 6 GHz uchaf, o dan ymagwedd newydd sy'n destun ymchwil gan Ofcom. Mae'r galw am ddata wedi tyfu'n sylweddol yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf - gan bobl sy'n defnyddio rhwydweithiau Wi-Fi a symudol ill dau - ac rydym yn disgwyl i hynny barhau. Bydd hyn yn rhoi pwysau ar sbectrwm radio, yr adnodd gwerthfawr a meidraidd y mae radiogyfathrebu yn ei gyfanrwydd yn dibynnu arno. Ar hyn o bryd mae'r band sbectrwm 6 GHz uchaf yn ffocws o ddiddordeb ar gyfer y diwydiant i gefnogi'r twf parhaus hwn mewn traffig. Mae'r diddordeb hwn wedi'i rannu rhwng defnyddio'r band i gyflwyno defnydd symudol trwyddedig yn unig neu ddefnydd eithriad trwydded pŵer isel, fel Wi-Fi, yn unig. Fodd bynnag, yn hytrach na dewis rhwng y ddau, credwn fod ymagwedd arall yn bosib. Rydym yn ymchwilio i opsiynau a fyddai'n galluogi'r defnydd o Wi-Fi a symudol ill dau yn y band. 'Rhannu hybrid' yw'r enw a roddwn i hyn. Dyma ddwy enghraifft o sut y gellid cyflawni hyn:
Rydym am nodi mecanweithiau rhannu hybrid priodol i hwyluso cydfodoli rhwng symudol a Wi-Fi trwyddedig yn y band hwn. Byddwn hefyd yn galw am gysoni rhannu hybrid yn y band hwn yn rhyngwladol, er mwyn galluogi arbedion maint ar gyfer offer. Gwahoddwn sylwadau ar yr ymagwedd hon erbyn 15 Medi 2023.
