RE: [802.21] 802.21 Ad Hoc meeting (Oct 31, Nov 1-2) details

Yes, on Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM we have an 802.21 sponsored tutorial on CALM (Communication Architecture for Land and Mobile Environment) by Dick Roy which should be an interesting presentation as well. We can have 802.16g related discussion on Tuesday morning.

Please come prepared with presentations.

Best Regards

-Vivek

Hi,

I just noticed that on Monday and Tuesday evening, we have very interesting tutorials. I guess many people including myself want to attend.

Vivek, Since Peretz and Ajay are arriving on Monday evening can you schedule 802.16g related discussion on Tuesday morning?

After discussion we can finalize the contribution and submit it to 802.16g before deadline.

Cheers,

- Ronny

Vivek, Ronny:

Luckily, the deadline for the 802.16g submission is Tuesday evening at 7:00PM.

So lets have an ad hoc session on Monday evening to work the 802.16g details below and reach a consensus, which will lead to potential contribution on these two topics.   Ajay and I will arrive on Monday evening and would like to take part in this discussion.

Michael: Per our NJ discussion, any conclusion on the size of the Information Services payload that may be transmitted in unauthenticated mode?

Ronny and 802.21 members:

1) During the last 802.16g meeting in Mont Tremblant, the attached "Fragmentation of MIH-MSG" contributions was not accepted because it was stated that the main reason the primary management connection is being used for MIH payload, is its ability to fragment. Since the primary 802.16 flow can naturally fragment, there is no need to add another fragmentation level.

>From 802.16-2004, section 6.3.2.3: MAC Management message on the Primary Management Connection may be packed and/or fragmented.
[Ronny] This issue is very much related to the issue #2 below. In MIH query/response in un-authenticated state, there has always been possibility of  DoS attack from un-authenticated users who send hundreds and thousands of initial ranging messages but in case of accessing information service,  BS is allowing a query from MSs. Of course if BS decides not to accept the query from the MS then it is okay to MS because MS has not entered the network.  Because of this usage we have to change the usage of MOB_MIH-MSG. This shall be transported not only primary connection but also over multicast connection. Primary connection and broadcast connection are no problem because fragmentation is already supported. Therefore, we need fragmentation in MAC message level.

2) MIH query/response in un- authenticated state was not submitted, as it could be a security hole and be used for DoS attacks. I would like to socialize it among us first.
(The amount of data exchanged  in un- authenticated state must be very small, maybe just MIH capabilities exchange)
[Ronny] This is one of major benefits of information service, I believe. This has been discussed tremendously in 802.11u. Because 802.21 information service could be their perfect solution 802.11u accepted 802.21 Information service in state 1 (un-authenticated state) as their Network Selection scheme. I think this can be applied to 802.16 network as well. There is a working group called Global Roaming Working Group in WiMAX. GRWG is looking for solution to similar scenario. MIH query/response could be one of perfect solution to the network selection of global roaming.

3) Submission deadline for the next 802.16g meeting in Dallas is Nov 11th.
[Ronny] We need to reach the conclusion of the issues above first.

Lets decide what we want to do next, Peretz Feder
