The IEEE 802.24 Scope

The IEEE 802.24 Vertical Applications TAG is responsible for focusing on application categories that use 802 technology and are of interest to one or more IEEE 802 WGs.

For those application categories, IEEE 802.24:

• The 802.24 TAG acts as a liaison and point of contact with industry organizations, other SDOs, government agencies, IEEE societies, etc., for questions regarding the use of IEEE 802 standards in those vertical applications.
• The 802.24 TAG develops white papers, presentations and other documents that do not require a PAR and are related to current 802 WG PARs and finished IEEE 802 standards that enable applications that could be vertically supported by IEEE 802 cross layer functionality.
• The 802.24 TAG acts as a resource for understanding 802 standards for regulatory agencies and for certification efforts by industry bodies, that require more than one IEEE 802 WG's input.

Examples of vertical application categories are: Smart Grid, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Smart Homes, Smart Cities, eHealth, AI Management and Control.

Getting involved in IEEE 802.24

The IEEE 802.24 Vertical Applications TAG meets during IEEE 802 Plenary and Wireless Interim sessions. In addition, conference calls may be announced, as covered under the rules for IEEE 802 TAGs, as defined in the IEEE Project 802 LMSC Operations Manual.

The IEEE 802 Management Services Plane Initiative

The newly proposed IEEE 802 Management Services plane is described on mentor at the following link.  Comments and feedback on this proposal are welcome at upcoming IEEE 802.24 session meetings and teleconferences.  The proposed management plane relies on YANG models supported by CORECONF and NETCONF, and provides a unified management interface for the entire IEEE 802 standards family. For an overview comparison of CORECONF and NETCONF, see an introductory presentation at following link.  Please contact the IEEE 802.24 leadership if you are interested in participating in future discussions.

An example of how a YANG model has been incorporated into an 802.1 amendment is IEEE 802.1AXdz-2025.

Ethernet YANG model definitions are published as IEEE 802.3.2-2025 IEEE Standard for YANG Data Model Definitions.

Recommendations on how to engage in YANG developments that support IEEE 802 Mgmt Services:

• IEEE 802 Task Group members should:
• participate in the 802 YANG SC for YANG source code development
• participate in the 802.1YANGsters
• include within its PAR scope, building an 802.11 YANG model schema for the mgmt. interface plane
• participate in 802.24 meetings for framework discussions
• participate in ITU Standing Committee for liaison discussions with the ITU-T
• participate in ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC6 Standing Committee for liaison discussions through Peter Yee
• participate in YANG liaison discussions with IETF
• Collaborate with 802.24 and 802.18 to inform regulators, industry organizations, other SDOs, government agencies, and IEEE societies through white papers, presentations
• Collaborate with 802.24 about the overall architecture of the provided 802 management services, the scope of its functionality, and its limitations.

• IEEE 802 hosted a series of Tech Talks on topics related to IEEE 802. The 802.24 Tech Talk was on Wed April 14, 2021 @ 9am ET. The presentation is available at this link.

In Progress White Papers

• 2025:  802.24 continues development of multiple white papers. 
• The Internet of Things White Paper continues development with new content and a new outline. Contributions are welcomed.
• The white paper on Communications Standards for Alternate Fuel Vehicles (AFV) continues development. Contributions are welcomed.
• Updates of the original Smart Grid White Paper from 2014 are underway. (Link to Draft of update). Contributions are welcomed.

• 2024:  802.24 continues development of multiple white papers. 
• The Internet of Things White Paper is in the development stage, with some content and outline. Contributions are welcomed.
• The Low Latency White Paper  is nearing completion with final review and editing.
• The IEEE 802 Solutions for Vertical Applications has been completed and forwarded to IEEE for formatting and publication.
• Development of a new white paper on Communications Standards for Alternate Fuel Vehicles (AFV) is underway. Contributions are welcomed.
• The original Smart Grid White Paper  will be updated and revised. Contributions are welcomed.

• 2023:  802.24 continues development of three white papers. Internet of Things White Paper,  Low Latency White Paper, and IEEE 802 Solutions for Vertical Applications,  and is starting development of a new white paper on communications standards for Alternate Fuel Vehicles (AFV).
