[802.3_100GNGOPTX] Formation of Consensus Ad hoc

Dear Colleagues,

For those who did not attend our meeting in Geneva, here is a brief update on the state of our draft and our SMF baseline proposal. Kapil will be updating the website and posting the minutes soon, but I wanted to get a few things done quickly to advance the interest of the Task Force.

Draft 1.0 comment resolution was completed and the editorial team is now working on draft 1.1 for recirculation.

We held a straw poll to identify the order of motions for SMF baseline adoption. The results of that straw poll led to motions by four baseline proponents, all of which substantially failed to obtain the necessary 75% level required for adoption.

Motions to adopt:

DMT:          Y: 27           N: 51           A: 31

PAM8:        Y: 32           N: 48           A: 34

CWDM:      Y: 37           N: 55           A: 27

PSM4:        Y: 48           N: 45           A: 26

During my 802.3 closing report, I observed that given our schedule, its unlikely that we can achieve the necessary consensus to adopt an SMF baseline without impacting our project schedule and potentially, due to resources shifting toward the 400G project, we could potentially stall if we continue to work on this baseline proposal. There were concerns raised within 802.3 that our 5C responses may not accurately reflect the activity of our project if a new SMF PMD is not adopted.

To address the continued lack of consensus on a new SMF PMD, and provide a forum for modifying our objectives and 5C responses to align them with the current state of our project, I am proposing to form a "Consensus Ad hoc". I will chair this group and it will be open to all participants. The focus of the group will be to provide a forum for discussion on consensus efforts, and a revision of our project documents to align them with the project state. This will enable us to ensure we go into the September Interim with consensus on how to proceed and have recommendations to the Task Force for modification of our project documents.

The first meeting of the Consensus Ad hoc will be this Thursday at 8am PDT. I will be sending out a notice shortly with the dial-in information.

Regards,
