[8023-10GEPON] May minutes and plans for July

Dear Colleagues,

Unapproved minutes from our Geneva meeting have been posted at
http://www.ieee802.org/3/av/public/2007_05/3av_0705_minutes_unapproved.p
df

Please, review and report inaccuracies, if any found.

NEW BASELINE PROPOSALS
----------------------
During the meeting, the task force has approved several baseline
motions:

Motion #3: 10 Gbps upstream signal to have a pass band of 20 nm.

Motion #5: 802.3av shall not support a physical XAUI interface between
PHY and MAC in the ONU.

Motion #6: The FEC algorithm shall accept as its input Nx65bit payloads
(the second bit of the sync header plus 64 bits of data) pre-pended with
padding consisting of zeros to bring the input codeword to the required
size; notwithstanding, both bits of the sync header shall be
transmitted, while the padding shall not be transmitted, as illustrated
in 3av_0705_effenberger_4.pdf.

Motion #7: To accept as a baseline for FEC framing the presentations
3av_0701_effenberger_1.pdf, 3av_0703_kramer_1.pdf, and
3av_0705_lynskey_1.pdf.

You may review all baseline proposals and supporting slides at
http://www.ieee802.org/3/av/public/baseline.html

NEW PROCEDURE FOR PRESENTERS
----------------------------
Please, note that Procedure for Presenters has been modified according
to Motion #8. According to this motion, any presentation that misses the
submission deadline will not be given time at the meeting. Submission
deadline is Monday of the week preceding the meeting.

PREPARING FOR JULY MEETING
--------------------------
We have a little over one month left till our July meeting. If you have
not reserved a hotel yet, please do so soon. Hotel information is
located at http://ieee802.facetoface-events.com/sessions/44/hotel1.php

We have identified a number of tasks for our next meeting:

1) Our editors are busy preparing draft 0.8 based on currently accepted
baseline proposals.

2) The wavelength ad hoc group shall develop a recommendation on central
upstream wavelength (see Motions #4 and #4a).

3) We have two strong camps advocating PIN@ONU and APD@ONU. We
identified a number of arguments for and against each proposal; some
arguments are in direct contradiction with each other. I expect that
representatives of both camps will find and present reliable references
to justify their respective arguments and that by the next meeting we
will reduce the number of contradicting arguments.

4) The wavelength ad hoc has shown that the only feasible downstream
band (for coexistence) is 6 nm wide centered around 1577 nm. It also was
stated that this is a more expensive solution than 20 nm wide at 1490
nm, and it would be an unnecessary burden for carriers doing green-field
deployment of 10GEPON. We need to continue this discussion and decide
whether we have only one or two downstream wavelength, keeping
"one-solution-for-one-problem" requirement in mind.

5) The chair will present "simplex PMD" proposal to working group during
802.3 opening session, so that we can address .3 recommendations during
TF sessions later in the week.

(If I missed any tasks, please let me know.)

I encourage all participants to work in groups and utilize the reflector
to the greatest extent possible.

Thank you,
Glen
