Subject: [802.3] July plenary meeting announcement
Colleagues:
IEEE 802.3 will meet July 16-19 in San Francisco, California, USA. All
802.3 meetings are scheduled for the Hyatt Regency San Francisco (at
Embarcadero Center). The deadline for the early registration discount
is fast approaching (29 June). As always, the LMSC session
announcement, registration and current hotel availability information
can be found through the "Next IEEE 802 Plenary session notice" link on
our home web page (www.ieee802.org/3).
To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions,
subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector (http://listserv.ieee.org).
The opening 802.3 working group (WG) meeting will begin at 1:00 pm on
Monday, July 16, and the closing 802.3 WG meeting will be 1:00 pm on
Thursday, July 19. These meetings will follow our typical schedule also
found on our web site. The detailed agenda will be provided and
approved at the meeting; and the minutes of the November meeting can
serve as a prototype order for topics. As usual, task force (TF), study
group (SG), standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will
be scheduled between the opening and closing 802.3 meetings. In
addition, the Higher Speed Study Group will be meeting Monday morning at
9:00 am (per our rules this is considered as an interim meeting).
For any that have not attended our meetings this year, a new requirement
is in force requiring attendees to declare their employer and
affiliation to receive attendance credit and retain member privileges.
As usual, attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at
three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how
long a particular TF might be meeting. The attendance books will only
be available on Thursday at the closing 802.3 plenary meeting (not
during the morning TF meetings).
A number of WG decisions are expected during the 802.3 meetings (most on
Thursday). Depending on the amount of discussion, the Thursday meeting
may run beyond our target
5:30 pm ending time. To be safe you should plan to be in the meeting
until at least 6:00 pm (especially if you are interested in the study
group activities. I look forward to seeing you in Orlando. Additional
subgroup information follows. Contact information for task force and
study group chairs, archival project information and materials for the
upcoming meeting can be found on our web site: www.ieee802.org/3.

802.3 BUSINESS (Mon & Thu)
In addition to regular WG business, there will be task force and study
group business based on the below status.
TASK FORCE / STUDY GROUP MEETINGS
P802.3ap Task Force - Backplane Ethernet (not meeting)
P802.3ap has completed its work and will not be meeting, though the
recent publication of IEEE Std 802.3ap-2007 will be recognized.
P802.3ar Task Force - Congestion Management (Tue morning)
The P802.3ar Task Force remains in a stalemate condition that has not
been resolved. It was decided during the January interim meeting to
only hold a brief meeting (~ one hour) to discuss if there is any reason
to revisit the current stalemate in 802. Those wishing to present
during the task force meeting should contact the 802.3 Chair.
P802.3at Task Force - DTE Power Enhancements (Tue-Thu)
The P802.3at has had an early draft out for review and comment. The
task force will be attempting to get the draft to be technically
complete.. TF members have been tasked with maintenance requests
related to DTE Power and proposed resolutions to those current requests
are included in that 802.3at/D0.8 draft. Those wishing to present
during the task force meetings should contact the Chair, Mr. Mike
McCormack.
P802.3av Task Force - 10 Gb/s EPON (Tue-Thu)
The P802.3av Task Force is also working on developing its draft
amendment to IEEE Std 802.3. Those wishing to present during the task
force meetings should contact the Chair, Mr. Glen Kramer. The task
force will also be asking for advice from 802.3 on the concept of
"simplex PMD".
802.3ax, 802.3ay & Maintenance Task Force - (Tue or Wed)
The 802.3ax (P802.3AX) and 802.3ay (P802.3) working group ballots closed
and recirculation ballots are anticipated prior to the July plenary
meeting. The task force will address any comments from these
recirculation ballots, and any other appropriate maintenance items.
Questions about maintenance activities can be addressed to maintenance
Chair, Mr. David Law.
Higher Speed Study Group (Tue-Thu)
This study group has been in existence for some time. There is
currently a division of opinion preventing advancement of the study
group to a standards development task force. This division has
advocates for 100 Gb/s operation, to support the bandwidth needed on
aggregated links, with a separate group advocating 40 Gb/s operation for
server connection. The lack of progress is caused by a failure to come
to consensus on how to address these two different requirements. The
study group will be attempting to get WG approval of a PAR or PARs at
the closing plenary meeting. (Because of process requirements, it will
be impossible to get LMSC approval for any PARs until November.) In
support of PAR work, five criteria documents must be approved for
proposed objectives for higher speed operation. Those wishing to
present during the study group meetings should contact the Chair, Mr.
John D'Ambrosia.
Energy Efficient Ethernet Study Group (Tue-Thu)
The study group will be requesting 802.3 and LMSC Executive Committee
approval for a project to develop an amendment to IEEE Std 802.3. While
some polishing of the PAR and Five Criteria documents may occur, work
will be focused on further refinement of the objectives for the
requested task force and possible energy efficiency mechanisms. Those
wishing to present during the study group meetings should contact the
Chair, Mr. Mike Bennett.
Rules, Interpretations (may not be required)
At present, there are no new proposed rules changes or interpretations.
Rules changes discussed in March will be considered by 802.3.
PROJECT AUTHORIZATION REQUESTS
IEEE 802.3 PARs
One new PAR will be considered in July by IEEE 802.3, the Executive
Committee and subsequently the IEEE-SA Standards Board. There has been
no notification to the WG Chair of any intent to reconsider the
P802.3ar, Congestion Management, modified PAR document previously
presented to the WG without action. The one 802.3 PAR is proposed
P802.3az, Energy Efficient Ethernet. A tutorial slot has also been
requested for the PAR.
