Subject: [8023-10GEPON] We are done!!!

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am very glad to announce that this morning IEEE-SA Standards Board has approved the IEEE 802.3av standard. This is a culmination of 3.5 years of hard work by a group of experts who, through their dedication have advanced the state of the art of the communications technology, while enduring tight deadlines, meetings through weekends, and frequent travel to remote locations.  I remember how we started in 2006 as a very diverse group with each member having very different assumptions about what our work should be or how we should proceed. But working through so many odd hours together in the end made us a very tight team, very focused and collaborative.

My special thanks to our editors: Duane Remein and Marek Hajduczenia. Throughout all these years, I was not able to find their breaking point, even though I tried very hard. I now believe they are unbreakable and I am very happy that they were such a key part of our team.

And whenever the chair of this group has led the task force into a procedurally-complicated situation (more times than I care to remember J), we could always count on sound advice by past and current 802.3 chairs: Bob Grow and David Low, and the vice chair Wael Diab. For that I thank them very much. IEEE 802.3 executive secretary Steve Carlson was always there for us to make sure that logistically we are all set and that the task force could be as productive as possible. Steve - without your efforts we would not be able to keep our schedule.

It is truly my privilege to get to know all of you and  to be part of this team and this project.

Sincerely,

Glen Kramer

(Past) Chair of IEEE 802.3av “10G-EPON” Task Force
