I agree. Attaching the name SONET to anything which isn't really SONET
equipment can only lead to confusion.

Since the LAN PHY is oriented toward the traditional LAN community and the
"WAN PHY" is, in one sense or another, oriented toward the traditional
Telecom community, how about calling it the Telecom PHY?
