FW: Opening Announcement: 802.3ae/D4.3 Third Recirculation
All,
I thought that you would all be interested in seeing the following announcement (yes, I removed the password information; the draft is also on our 802.3 site with the same password; if you don't know, don't ask :-).
At the Vancouver Interim meeting, we were able to close out all comments to Draft 4.2 (no surprise that!) and a number of the open TR's. Draft 4.3 (referenced below) is the first to recirculate only those pages that have changed (plus the PICs). Our expectation is that this will be a very clean comment cycle. The work on the logic clauses was extremely light and almost jovial in nature. Clause 52 (cleaning up after major changes to Drafts 4.0 and 4.1) had some long days. All technical changes were made real time with group editing. Time consuming? Yes. Arduous? Yes. But, the result looks very good.
We modified the date of the D4.3 Interim Meeting from April 29 to April 30, 2002. The meeting announcement should be up shortly on the 802.3 site. TDK volunteered to host the meeting at their site. Thank you Stefan!
This will be (we hope), the last P802.3ae interim meeting. If all goes to plan, Draft 4.4 will go out for final recirculation with no changes from Draft 4.3 and with all (or at least most) of the open technical comments closed. D4.4 will also be precirculated to REVCOM for June review. Assuming we receive no valid new comments against D4.4, we are done!
While it is possible that we might receive new comments that would cause us to make significant changes to D4.3, it is unlikely. At our Vancouver meeting, we -- for the first time this project -- disallowed a comment that was redundant with a comment previously rejected. We will not be bashful about doing this on April 30th.
It should be noted that there were new TR comments that effectively piled on to Brad Booth's comment requesting technical validation of the new test and measurement methodology. If there is to be any delay from the planned June completion, it is most likely to be additional pile on here. I have been told by the commenters that they will withdraw these comments once this is complete. "Stretch" (and the crew from Agilent T&M) have been working with the Serial PMD ad hoc (Piers Dawe, et al) to test these tests. Initial work has been very promising. Once complete, the rest should be slam dunk.
Jonathan Thatcher
(looking forward to being the retired) Chair, IEEE P802.3ae
P.S. I hear rumor that this years N+I is likely to be the grand finale to our work. I'm looking forward to this one!
