[802.3_B400G] IEEE P802.3df/D2.0 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Ethernet Working Group initial ballot

Dear Task Force Participants,

With this e-mail, I'd like to announce the start of the IEEE P802.3df/D2.0
400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Ethernet Working Group initial ballot.

Open date: Friday 17th March 2023
Close date: Sunday 16th April 2023 23:59 AOE

As stated in the announcement below, the ballot group for this draft is the
IEEE 802.3 voting membership as of Friday 17th March 2023. All comments
received before the close of the ballot will be considered, the one
limitation however is that if you are not a member of the balloting group,
and therefore cannot cast a ballot, you cannot designate comments as TR or
ER since you cannot cast a Disapprove ballot.

Best regards,
John D'Ambrosia
Chair, IEEE P802.3df 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Ethernet Task Force

-----

Dear Colleagues,

This is the announcement of the electronic IEEE 802.3 Working Group initial
ballot on the Amendment IEEE P802.3df 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Ethernet.
Remember that voting, as well as attendance, is a requirement to maintain
your IEEE 802.3 member (voter) status
<http://ieee802.org/3/rules/member.html#DOT3 >. Instructions for accessing
the draft, casting your ballot and submitting comments follow this
announcement. Please review the commenting instructions below to ensure you
are using the most up to date tools.

The ballot group for this draft is the IEEE 802.3 voting membership as of
Friday 17th March 2023.

BALLOT SCOPE:
As a Working Group initial ballot, the scope of the ballot is the complete
IEEE P802.3df draft.

CRITERIA FOR STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT:
One of the responsibilities as a balloter is to ensure that draft is
consistent with the criteria for standards development (CSD) responses which
are available at
<https://mentor.ieee.org/802-ec/dcn/21/ec-21-0306-01-ACSD-p802-3df.pdf >. An
Approve vote indicates your agreement that the draft is consistent with the
CSD responses.

BALLOT OPEN:
Friday 17th March 2023

BALLOT CLOSE:
Sunday 16th April 2023 23:59 AOE

The Project Authorization Request for this Amendment is available at
<https://ieee802.org/3/df/proj_doc/P802.3df_031222.pdf > and includes the
following:

TITLE:
Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Media Access Control Parameters for 800
Gb/s and Physical Layers and Management Parameters for 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s
Operation

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
Define Ethernet MAC parameters, physical layer specifications, and
management parameters for the transfer of Ethernet format frames at 800 Gb/s
over copper, multi-mode fiber, and single-mode fiber physical medium
dependent (PMD) sublayers based on 100 Gb/s per lane signaling technology.

Using these new definitions for 800 Gb/s, define physical layer
specifications and management parameters for the transfer of Ethernet format
frames at 400 Gb/s.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT:
The project is necessary to provide solutions to meet the growing bandwidth
needs for computing and network interconnect application areas, such as
cloud-scale data centers, internet exchanges, co-location services, content
delivery networks, wireless infrastructure, service provider and operator
networks, and video distribution infrastructure.

Thank you for your participation in this ballot and careful review of the
draft.
