Re: [802.3_B400G] Wed 24 Jan 2024 Interim Meeting

During maniloff_3dj_01_2401 Q&A the issue of  the role of the OIF verus IEEE 802.3 arose.

My view about OIF's role was explicitly stated in a recent OIF EEI Project Start proposal, consistent with prior characterizations:

"Maintains OIF pathfinder role for new optical interface approaches"

In contrast, 802.3's role is to standardize optical interfaces that have broad market potential, and are technically and economically feasible.

The O-band LR1 proposal is a novel optical interface approach with no existing market, technically immature as evidenced by the evolving and open technical items, and economic feasibility relying entirely on getting the 802.3 label.

This suggests that the right place for O-band LR1 is the OIF, with 802.3 the right place once actual products materialize and are shipped in volume. The best way to stifle innovation is to lock in early speculation about the right approach in a standard.
