[802.3_DMLT] Minutes of the IEEE 802.3br (IET Task Force) negotiation ad-hoc, February 27, 2014 teleconference

Minutes of the IEEE 802.3br (IET Task Force) negotiation ad-hoc, February 27, 2014 teleconference

   1.	Attendees were reminded to comply with the IEEE patent policy. There was a call for patents and nobody spoke up.

   2.	Most of the time was been spent discussing the presentation that Hugh prepared regarding the IET negotiation process (see attached). Hugh attempted to capture the essence of Norm's proposal from the previous call. During the discussion, it was pointed out that the mechanism is simple, but not quite the simplest possible. Further thought should be put into the precise details. It was also pointed out that the failure detection described did not quite catch all scenarios - particularly where a non-compliant device inserted between the erstwhile link partners accepts frames with IET defined SFD (instead of the current definition) and re-forms the frame with an old-style SFD. Some modifications to the mechanism were made on-the-fly to add a bit for "IET received" that can allow fault detection in that scenario. The modified presentation is attached.

   3.	There was general agreement to the overall structure of the proposal, so it can be used as a basis for further discussion. Clearly, the details need to be examined and (where necessary) refined to ensure that the mechanism works for all necessary cases.

Next teleconference will take place Thursday, March 06, 2014. WebEx link and dial-in numbers are the same.
