[802.3_GT50GBIDI] Wed, September 14, 7:30am – 9:00am (New York) meeting call for contributions

All,

I would like to publicize our first meeting of the >50G bidi study group.  The meeting invite is copied below, and you can also see it on the official 802.3 calendar: https://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/3/calendar.html

Our main task here is to create the PAR, 5 CSD’s and Objectives for the project.  The meeting page already has copied the project documents from 802.3cp. I would suggest that we start from this basis, and then make modifications to suit our new project.

 

Please give me requests for meeting time by Sep 6, and the presentation itself by Sep 9.

 

The big-ticket item (in my opinion) is the setting of the objectives for the PHY speeds.  At present, I think there is already good consensus that 100 Gb/s should be an objective. I am less certain about 200 and 400 Gb/s. I would like the group to exchange their views on this (and any other issues). We should consider the technical and economic feasibility, and the expected time to standard.  For example, if the group thinks that 400G bidi is feasible but will take years longer to reach agreement than 100G, then it might be better put in another project. Conversely, it is more efficient if we can tackle multiple speeds in a single project.

The purpose is to develop the project documentation (PAR, 5 CSD’s, and Objectives) to prepare for the November plenary meeting.
