Even though the I2C protocol can theoretically reach 5 Mbps, real camera modules rarely exceed 1 Mbps (most are 400Kbps). In practice, a 100 Mbps Ethernet link has more aggregate capacity than 20 separate I2C camera links.

 

When you scale to 10–20 cameras on one aggregation path, the 10 Gbps downlink becomes the first real bottleneck — long before the 100 Mbps uplink is anywhere near its limit.

During Q/A of Tony's presentation, we discussed the maximum data rate to each camera. A key data point from this discussion was the maximum speed of I2C. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I2C the maximum I2C speed is in the range 100kbps to 5Mbps. This means that we can support up to 20 I2C links within a 100Mbps link.
