[802.3_RTPGE] AW: AW: [802.3_RTPGE] Channel definitions ad hoc contribution

Hello Chris,

longer (>15m) link segments have to met with better (e.g. shielded) cables. I think this has been said many times. In the car the average link length is 3,5m.

Everyone in the group has the choice: Either you make a good product for the needs of automotive and have the chance to can gain a good share of a 400Million port market, or you make a product for whoever needs longer links and you can maybe gain a good share of a 1 Million port market and a small share of a 400Million port market.

Please, do not make the link segment more difficult than it needs to be. If you like I repeat the survey for car manufacturers with minimum and nice to have requirements. We have been wanting to do this anyway, but sort of never got round to it, because there did not seem to be enough questions after all.

I suggest three questions:

1.)    For the use of 1Gbps Ethernet in cars, what is the minimum gauge requirement for unshielded cabling (UTP), what would be nice to have? 0,35mm², 0,18mm², 0,14mm²?

2.)    What is the minimum temperature requirement for 1Gbps Ethernet over UTP, what would be nice to have? 85°C, 105°C, 125°C.

3.)    If you have the choice between a solution that works over 26AWG i.e. ~14mm² shielded and a solution that works over 22AWG i.e. ~0,35mm² unshielded in 90% of your use cases, which solution would you prefer?

Kind regards,

Kirsten

Kirsten,

Thanks for the input...the basis for the 26 AWG stranded are twofold...

(1)Survey responses suggested 26 AWG stranded cable for future automotive applications....(size, flexibility).

(2)An insertion loss budget based on 26 AWG stranded (15 meters) will enable longer link segments based on 22 AWG stranded (i.e., longer than 15 meters) satisfying some portion (TBD) of the "optional" link segment reach objective of "at least 40 meters".

Regards, Chris

Hello Chris and everybody else,

just one clarification. Automotive is not asking for 26AWG stranded cable unshielded. 22AWG stranded cable unshielded needs to me met. If something above works is nice but not a hard requirement.

Kind regards, Kirsten

Xiaofeng,

The baseline link segment insertion loss I proposed is "based" on 15 meters of 26 AWG stranded cable (temperature corrected using a factor of 0.4 % increase per °C from 20 °C to 125 °C) and four in-line connectors.  Other cable gauges and lengths that meet the baseline link segment insertion loss can be used.

The baseline is not a recommendation for 26 AWG. 26 AWG was used for the baseline as a result of an IEEE survey of the automotive industry; responses suggesting 26 AWG stranded cable for future automotive applications.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Does the baseline proposal recommends AWG 26 cables?
