[802.3_SPMD] Closing remaining comments - R1-30

All – I encourage you to use the reflector to close the remaining comments.  I will start a thread on each.  This one is for R1-30.

Comment R1-30 relates to the requirement we added to 188.9.1.6 TCI line powering current tolerance, requiring TCI insertion loss, return loss, and mode conversion loss to be met with up to 2A current through the TCI.

The commenter referenced that this meant that unpowered nodes would be burdened with physically larger inductors to be able to carry the current without core saturation, and asked that the current to meet the clause 188 TCI electrical parameters be limited to 0.2A, and that for currents between 0.2A and 2A the TCIs would meet the electrical requirements for 1UL TCIs in clause 189 (which would allow core saturation).

The editor noted that the proposed change did not mean that these TCIs would be damaged by 2A current – as there was a separate requirement to avoid damage with 2A current – but only that the performance requirements would be reduced on powered segments.

The following proposed response was offered:

PROPOSED ACCEPT IN PRINCIPLE.

In 188.9.1.6 line 33 change "2A" to "0.2A";

Add new final sentence: "For currents between 0.2A and 2A, TCIs shall meet the return loss requirements of 189.6.1 for N_unit=1."

(note N_unit is with underscore - editor to see text formatting in clause 189)

In PICS TCI7, change "2 A" to "0.2A" in Value/comment

Insert new PICS TCI8 after TCI7 and renumber.

Feature: Return loss when powering current is applied

Subclause: 188.9.1.6

Value: Meets return loss requirements in 189.6.1 for N_unit = 1 for currents between 0.2A and 2A."

Status: M

Support: Yes [ ]

The next action is for review.

One consideration is whether we should also add a statement to clause 189.2 Mixing segment noting that unpowered unit loads are considered as 1UL devices when configuring a clause 189 mixing segment.

As such, I would propose additionally adding to the response.

Add a new final paragraph to 189.2 (P 139 L38) stating:

For powered segments that also are mixing segments carrying data, the MPI return loss requirements are specified in 189.6.1 to allow plug-and-play operation for up to 16 unit loads of MPD nodes fed by a 16 UL MPSE.  Unpowered clause 188 TCIs on the mixing segment should be considered as 1 unit load MPIs when configuring mixing segments.  Greater numbers of nodes on a mixing segment are possible with engineering consideration of node placement and actual loading.  Such engineering is beyond the scope of this standard.
