Chad – a couple of comments on the commented K.147 document.
This term surprised some 802.3 members as they forgot (or overlooked) it in previous reviews. PoE definitely DOES NOT mean power over everything and this statement is misleading.
I believe we might soften it to be more acceptable, and, at the same time make it more accurate: This term surprised some 802.3 members as they forgot (or overlooked) it in previous reviews. In the collective experience of the experts, using PoE as “power over everything” is unusual
and certainly not common. While most recall a single author’s reference to the acronym as that term, the consensus was that this phrase could be misleading. We would suggest that having the recommendation state “The [b-Ivans] presentation suggests that PoE
has come to mean power over everything. “ doesn’t add clarity to the recommendation and only propagates confusion, and should be deleted.
Also, looking at the multiple K.21 documents, I must admit, I am confused by the status of the differential test for internal cables – is it deleted, or is it just proposed to be deleted? If the proposal is
accepted, we probably will need some text related to the 802.3 position – which I think can be easily adapted from what you’ve got. George Zimmerman, Ph.D. President & Principal CME Consulting, Inc. All, I have taken the feedback from the group review of the k series documents in yesterday’s meeting, incorporated them into new docs and posted them to the private area. The intent of this effort is to share
the documents with the SG5 folks during their meeting this week. I was able to get registered today and got to join for about the last 45 minutes of today. They meet again tomorrow and wrap up on Monday. There is a chance that we have to submit these as formal
work items, I will find that out by the end of their meeting and report back to this group.
Please take 15 minutes to review the newly posted docs (in the k series private area, the first five URLs on the page) and let me know if I made any errors in transcribing our comments or missed anything.
