Both rx_symbol and tx_symbol appear within the 5600 pages of IEEE Std 802.3™-2018 (Revision of IEEE Std 802.3-2015) many times.
In the Transmit Functional Specifications, “tx_symbol” first appears in clause 94.2.2, figure 94-2, and “rx_symbol” in clause 94.2.3, figure 94-3. These clauses define the transmit process and receive process for FEC (PMA client) into
and from PAM4 optical encoding/decoding. Since 802.3ct D1.1 uses rx_symbol only in the 154.2 Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) service interface, it does not need a definition, as Mr. Stassar stated, in my opinion.
