Bob,
You are very correct about why SONET is deployed as two node rings today
instead of single linear systems. The metro cable plants are configured as
rings, even though more often than not, the large scale service providers
deploy a mesh of two node rings instead of multi-node rings. The different
sides of the ring can take the different directions around the ring. There
is nothing that is in RPR that can not be done in SONET today, except do
statistical multiplexing, which causes reliability problems.
