[802.3_DIALOG] July plenary announcement
Dear Colleagues,
IEEE 802.3 will meet Monday 14th July through Thursday 17th July 2014 in San Diego, CA, USA. The IEEE 802.3 meetings are scheduled to occur in the Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, CA, USA. As always, the IEEE 802 LMSC session announcement, registration and current hotel information can be found through the 'Next IEEE 802 Plenary session notice' link on our home web page <www.ieee802.org/3>. To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions, subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector <http://listserv.ieee.org>.
The IEEE 802.3 working group (WG) opening plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Monday 14th July, and the IEEE 802.3 WG closing plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Thursday 17th July. Task Force (TF), Study Group (SG), Maintenance standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE 802.3 meetings as illustrated in our typical schedule also found on our web site <http://www.ieee802.org/3/plenary.html>. The draft agenda, as well as liaison letters received so far, are available in the minutes area <http://www.ieee802.org/3/minutes/jul14/index.html> and will be updated as required prior to the meeting. The agenda will be approved at the meeting.
We will gather two records of attendance, the attendance tracking tool and attendance books in each meeting. The attendance tool will be the only official record of attendance for building and maintaining WG membership. The meeting attendance books will be used to record the attendance in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.
Attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how long a particular TF or SG might be meeting. The attendance tracking tool will only allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Thursday morning meetings). A number of WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most on Thursday during the closing meeting). Depending on the amount of discussion, the Thursday closing meeting may run beyond our target 18:00 ending time, so please plan your travel accordingly.

Please note that IEEE P802.3bm 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Fibre Optic Task Force will be holding an interim meeting on the Sunday and Monday morning prior to the IEEE 802.3 Opening plenary and that the IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections Next Generation Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NG-EPON) Ad Hoc will be meeting on the Sunday prior to the IEEE 802.3 Opening plenary.
On the evening of Wednesday 16th July 2014 a Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) session will be held for all attendees to gather and discuss emerging applications that may leverage or impact the overall IEEE 802 community. The format of the BOF will be short presentations from a selected panel to seed the discussion on how emerging applications may affect, leverage, or utilize technology based on the IEEE 802 family of standards.

The draft PAR, CSD and objectives are pending IEEE 802.3 Working Group approval at this meeting prior to seeking approval of both the PAR and CSD by the IEEE 802 LMSC Executive committee. Since the submission deadline for the August 2014 NesCom meeting (11th July 2014) occurs prior to the date of the July IEEE 802 EC meeting, I have pre-submitted the draft PAR to NesCom on the understanding that any changes to the draft PAR text resulting from the Plenary review process will be promptly communicated to the NesCom Administrator and should the IEEE 802.3 Working Group or the IEEE 802 LMSC Executive Committee not approve the submission, it will be removed from the NesCom agenda.

This will be the fourth meeting of the IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections Next Generation Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NG-EPON) Ad Hoc. The activity has been chartered to generate a report which will detail: (a) operators' requirements, (b) technological and economic tradeoffs of various approaches to next generation EPON, (c) the state of the art for optical subscriber access network technology, and (d) potential solutions that merit further consideration.

The use of Top of Rack 4x10Gb/s breakout using 40Gb/s interfaces has become very popular over the last few years in hyper-scale data centers and cloud services providers. As these data centers prepare to transition to 100Gb/s Ethernet, there is an expectation to use the 100Gb/s 4x25Gb/s interface specified in IEEE P802.3bj and IEEE P802.3bm as effectively as is done with the 4x10Gb/s 40Gb/s Ethernet interface. Efficient and effective data center and cloud architectures would utilize the 25Gb/s technology within the 4x25Gb/s 100Gb/s interface technology and enable breakout to single lane 25Gb/s interfaces. At this time, there is no ability for data centers and cloud services providers to enable this network efficiency without a common specification for 25Gb/s Ethernet. This Call For Interest is a request for the formation of a study group to 1) explore enhancements that take advantage of interfaces within IEEE P802.3bj and IEEE P802.3bm to provide a single lane 25Gb/s Ethe!
rnet specification for server interconnects, and 2) the market requirements supporting the server-TOR application of a 25Gb/s Ethernet interface.

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the afternoon of Monday 14th July. A call for interest consensus building meeting will be scheduled to occur during the week. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 17th July.

At the March 2014 plenary we discussed two proposed revisions to the IEEE 802.3 operating rules. It is expected that a vote will occur at the IEEE 802.3 closing plenary to decide if the change should be accepted, rejected or sent out for a Working Group ballot.
