Re: [802.3_DIALOG] Sad news - Jonathan King

I have to agree with David – this was one of the best things I have seen, beautiful use of dry humor.

Jonathon was one of the people that I would got to for questions about the optical side of 802.3. He was always willing to sit down and explain things (in small words so I could understand).

I will miss him. We will miss him.

Regards
Peter

I had several opportunities to talk to Jonathan about his adventures with his son and family.  Unfortunately, I did not get an extended opportunities to spend a lot of time with Jonathan.  I had the utmost respect for his technical expertise.   On several occasions, I did get to see the humorous side of Jonathon.

One of the most hilarious moments was his play on Roman vs Arabic numeral presentation that he sent to the 50G-NGOATH task force.   Shortly after 50G-NGOATH study group moved to a task force, and the work was divided into the new task force 802.3cd and remaining portions were added to the existing 802.3bs task force, Roman vs Arabic was still an open topic. There continued to be numerous passionate discussions in both task forces about AUI labeling methodologies (Roman vs Arabic numerals).   Jonathan make light of staying on the Roman numeral path.

Hi Chris and John,

I am terribly saddened with this news. I have a short story about Jonathan’s kindness.

The last time we were in Beijing China attending a Plenary Meeting, I arrived a day earlier (Sunday), checked in and dropped my luggage at my room. I was tired, dehydrated from the long trip from Los Angeles, went to the hotel lobby, and the first thing that happened was to be invited to get in a bus with other fellow colleagues to climb the Great Wall. At that time, I was ill prepared, had inappropriate clothes and shoes, but I got on the bus and I went with the team anyway. Halfway in the climb, I started slipping on the hill side due to my bad shoes. I was exhausted and ready to pass out (I really mean it; I was ready to pass out). Jonathan recognized my bad situation and unselfishly stayed behind giving me water and helping me to get back on my feet. We were in a very isolated Chinese country side area with no people in sight. I will never forget his generous assistance, and I let him know on more than one occasion how thankful I was, and I am still grateful for his help that day.

His family is in my thoughts.

[EXTERNAL]

Dear 802.3 Colleagues,

Below is a wonderful reminiscence of Jonathan’s life from the posted announcement of his passing. I hope you find it uplifting.

Chris

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jonathan was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England, the first son of three children.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his father, Des King, from whom he got his sense of humor and engineering mind.

He is survived by his mother, Yvonne, his wife, Linda, his son, Adam, his sisters, Janine and Suzanne, and several loving niece and nephews.

Jonathan was a Physicist by profession, a lover of science, with an extremely quick, intelligent, and intuitive mind. (Even on medication, he was still much quicker than his doctors). His humor was always quick, present, and sometimes appropriate. Jonathan was also a lifelong artist. His skills extended from painting, woodworking, gardening, stonework, to any craft he picked up. He was a talented 5 Rhythms dancer, where he met Linda.

Jonathan was an engaged and loving father (aka “Papa,”) taking Adam rock pooling, hiking, swimming, and skiing. He built countless sand castles and LEGO creations with his son. His love of nature and inquisitive mind will be carried on through him.

Jonathan was well loved by anyone he met- not only family and friends, but school teachers, neighbors, and people seated next to him in restaurants. Many a time Jonathan was known to make friends with the elderly people sitting next to him and his family in their favorite Italian restaurant. Jonathan was the person who would hold the door for people or assist those on the train needing help with their luggage. He was the person that helped his neighbor with their broken garage door or flat tire. He stayed up at night to fix his son’s broken truck (and many other toys, again and again.) His generosity and love for his son, wife, sisters, friends, and family shone out of him.

Jonathan’s English sensibilities were apparent in his choices for tea, whiskey, jumpers, puddings, custard, James Bond, Paddington, and Peter Rabbit. He enjoyed painting, puttering in the garden, building, making, and fixing things.

Jonathan had a strong moral compass and a self-effacing humility. (He would think this tribute is too long.) His charisma, kindness, and generosity were apparent in how he lived his life every day.

All,

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Jonathan King passed away on Wednesday, 31 July, 2019.  While Jonathan’s contributions to our community were numerous, I am sure many of us will be just missing our friend right now, who was simply a great guy.

The funeral will be on Friday, 9th of August in the UK.  Individuals wishing to attend should contact Pete Anslow for further details.  Please note that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network https://www.pancan.org or https://www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk

We will try to get together at the September meeting, and celebrate our friend.  If you have any thoughts or memories you wish to share, please direct them to the Dialog reflector.

With much sadness

John D’Ambrosia
