It looks like one area not yet covered is impact on the new EFM devices -
The twisted pair physical layers, 10PASS-TS and 2BASE-TL there send frames onto a physical layer with a data rate much slower than the attached MAC. Therefore they have to buffer most of the frame. The amount will be proportional to the frame size.
EPON PHYs doing FEC have to buffer amounts proportional to the frame size. The transmitter has to buffer 16 parity bytes * frame size MOD 239. The receiver has to buffer the whole frame so it can do the error detection and correction when it receives the FEC bytes.
