Subject: Re: 802.1AB LLDP TLVs for
use with 802.3at DTE Power Enhancements
Mike -
We discussed your informal communiqué this morning at our interim meeting, and
the Interworking Task Group asked me to make the following informal responses
to the questions you posed.
If a new 802.3 subtype was added, can the subclause
reference be in 802.3?
We could reserve some code points
in P802.1AB and have the definitive text in .3, but you would have to document
not only the TLVs but also the MIB objects so this is not an easy solution
mechanically (the MIB is in the 802.3 extension annex in the 802.1 document).
An alternative would be for 802.1 to hand the 802.3 annex over to 802.3 for you
to maintain, much as is happening with Link Aggregation. However, in the short
term, we have changes to make to this annex that would need to be completed
first anyway, so my personal conclusion is that this isn't ideal either.
If a new 802.3 subtype was added, do all the previous
802.3 or other subtypes have to be implemented in order to be compatible with
the new subtype?
The existing intent is that you
impelemt all or nothing. We want to keep it this way - the existing TLVs are
not onerous and are useful (with the possible exception of the Link Agg which
should probably now be in the 802.1 section).
Implementing the TLVs doesn't mean that they all have to be enabled all of the
time (they are disabled by default).
Can new TLV definitions be added to the entry labeled
802.3 subtype 2, and if so, can 802.3at request modifications to the existing
descriptions of this subtype?
Yes, this could be changed if so
desired.
What is the window of opportunity for 802.3at to
request and pursue any of the 3 options above within the current 802.1AB
Revision project?
We are currently in WG ballot; we anticipate Sponsor ballot
will be in July timeframe.
I hope that answers your questions - please let me know if you need
clarification.
Regards,
Tony

hesitate to ask me, or Geoff (who was present at my meeting and has indicated
he may attend yours).
